Jack White, originally John Anthony Gillis, was born in Detroit, Michigan. He is known for his unique and unusual music style. He has been described as edgy, odd, cool, and sometimes temperamental but always talented. His music style combines blues, garage rock, alternative, and experimental genres with folksy and country variations. His style is always changing and adapting, which is why he is successful with various musical collaborations.
Jack does vocals, guitar, bass guitar, drums, and keyboard. His strongest music influences were Pink Floyd, Doors, and Led Zeppelin.
At age nineteen, he had his first musical success when he joined Goober and The Peas as their drummer. However, in 1996, he left the band and formed another with his high school sweetheart and later wife, Meg White. Meg and Jack went to coffee shops, visited record stores, and attended various music events. Jack revolved around his day job upholstery work and at night playing with local bands at local gigs at night. In 2001, their band The White Stripes came out with their first album, White Blood Cells, and then in 2003, Elephant. However, in 2004, their most successful single, Seven Nation Army, came out and was named number one on the Billboard Modern Rock chart for three weeks, winning the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Rock Song. Then, in 2005, Get Behind Me Satan was their last album. Jack and Meg’s relationship was starting to experience difficulties, and the band split over creative differences.
2005 Jack formed a new band with Brendon Benson, Jack Lawrence, and Patrick Keller, The Raconteurs. The result was the band’s debut album, Broken Boy Soldiers, released in 2006. Reaching the Top Ten charts in the US and the UK, it was nominated for Best Rock Album at the 2006 Grammy Awards. The lead single, Steady, As She Goes was nominated for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. The band produced several additional albums, and Jack collaborated with artists from different genres. Some of the best-known are Ricky Skaggs who recorded Old Enough, and Alicia Keys’s Another Way to Die.
Jack’s most recent album, No Name, featured several popular tracks, such as “That’s How I’m Feeling,” “Tonight,” “Old Scratch,” and “It’s Rough on Rats.”
In his free time, Jack works with the National Recording Preservation Foundation to save old, deteriorating sound records. Jack has personally donated over 200K to this cause.
This artist will definitely continue to entertain and influence the music industry. We shall watch and wait.
